Objective

Find a high-quality historical photo to add an image you have taken of yourself into the composition to make it look realistic.

Solution

Incorporated an image I took of myself dressed in clothing similar to the era to blend into the 1973 photo of African Americans waiting in line at a relief station after being displaced by the Great Ohio River Flood in Louisville, Kentucky. Through using techniques such as masking, filter masks, retouching the photo with the healing brush, spot contrast layers, adding noise, and greyscale incorporating my image was completed. Attention to shadows, and lighting were considered to ensure the addition to the photo looked believable. Learning outcomes included painting with light layers and using the cloning tool to retouch distracting elements. The photograph below from “The Black House 1973-1976” series was a practice project that was considered for the final. Additional work can be done to increase the shadows and adjust the highlights on my photograph to ensure a better integration into the photo. Overall the process was fun especially seeing the final results.
